Kids Staying Active!

Helping our youth stay active and healthy is one of the main concerns that we as a nation face today.  The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reports that the prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 – 11 increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008.  (Check out their website at www.cdc.gov!)  A higher obesity rate in children can lead to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, strokes, osteoarthritis, and a higher obesity rate as adults.  So how can we as parents and caregivers help our kids stay active and avoid obesity?  Here are some great ways:

  1. Find everyday ways to stay active.  Go for a nightly walk, jump on your trampoline, or kick the soccer ball with your kids after dinner, and make it a habit, not an exception!
  2. Let your kids see you working out.  A healthy lifestyle from a parent correlates to a healthy lifestyle for kids, and it’s easy to go for a walk or jog during soccer practice or dance class.
  3. Limit computer, TV and video game time.  These have their time and their place, but make sure there is a healthy balance between active and inactive activities.

So get out there, have fun, and let’s get the future leaders of America active and healthy!
